TALLINN, May 14, BNS - The future of the West depends on the economy, not military force, former Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) Gen. Wesley Clark, said on Friday at the opening panel of the Lennart Meri Conference 2016 in Tallinn.
“The western world view and its post-cold-war euphoria is not quite as widely held as believed,” Clark said. He added that there was never a real agreement, but instead was coming to terms with the situation.
“We have to recognize, the the responsibility to protect [R2P] doctrine that emerged from the aftermath of Kosovo was a bridge too far at the time,” he said.
“The rule of law, its extension and the future of the west remains undecided,” Clark said. “Two major powers [China and Russia] say that there are alternatives. They treat democracy as an infectious disease.”
