WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker today announced a total of $1,209,790 in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to support fire departments in North and Central Jersey.

“Firefighters protect us all 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. They work through weekends and holidays that others take for granted,” said Sen. Menendez. “It’s their responsibility to protect us and our responsibility to protect them. This funding will help to ensure that these heroes have the resources they need to do their jobs safely and effectively.”

“We have an obligation to ensure New Jersey’s first responders have the tools necessary to continue protecting and serving our communities,” said Sen. Booker. “This federal investment takes an important step in fulfilling that mission by providing these brave men and women the resources they need to keep themselves and our families safe.”

The following departments received Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER) grants:

  • Asbury Park Fire Department – $694,038
  • Clifton Fire Department – $455,752

Funds under the SAFER program are intended to support the hiring of firefighters and the recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters.
